Blues & Jazz
Though the trio of John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood had already expanded the jazz genre with their first three records (two of which we have reissued here at Real Gone Music), it was this 1996 album that really crossed over and won the ensemble a whole new legion of listeners in the jam band camp. Recorded in a remote, solar-powered plywood shack in Hawaii (hence the title), Shack-Man brought the 70s soul-jazz beloved by the band firmly into the 90s, propelled by Medeskis simultaneously nostalgic yet forward-thinking excursions on the Hammond B-3. A masterpiece of groove, out on vinyl for the first time!

Nonesuch Records releases Ccile McLorin SalvantsMlusine on CD March 24, 2023 and LP on May 19, 2023. Mlusine features a mix of five originals and interpretations of nine songs, dating as far back as the twelfth century, mostly sung in French along with Occitan, English, and Haitian Kreyol.
The new albums songs tell the story of the European folkloric legend of Mlusine, a woman who turns into a half-snake each Saturday as a result of a childhood curse by her mother. Mlusine later agrees to marry Raymondin on the condition that he never see her on Saturdays. He agrees but is ultimately convinced by his brother to break his promise, piercing his wifes door with his sword and finding her naked in the bath, half snake, half woman. When she catches him spying on her, she turns into a dragon and flies out the window, only to reappear every time one of her descendants is on their deathbed.
Salvant, whose parents are French and Haitian, saysMlusine is also partly about that feeling of being a hybrid, a mixture of different cultures, which Ive experienced not only as the American-born child of two first generation immigrants, but as someone raised in a family that is racially mixed, from several different countries, with different languages spoken in the home.
Cobham's debut record after making a name for himself collaborating with Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra remains a remarkable moment in progressive jazz. "Stratus" would later be sampled on Massive Attack's "Safe From Harm" and featured in Grand Theft Auto IV radio.

Drummer, composer, and producer Tom Skinner who is the drummer for The Smile and Sons of Kemet releases his new album, Voices of Bishara, on November 4, 2022, via Brownswood / International Anthem / Nonesuch. The first recording under Skinners own name is a reference to an album he listened to repeatedly during the COVID-19 lockdown: cellist Abdul Waduds 1978 solo album By Myself, which was privately pressed on Waduds label, Bishara. The common Arabic name has the intention or meaning of good news or the bringer of good news. Voices of Bishara began life when Tom Skinner asked some musician friends to join him for a Played Twice session at Londons Brilliant Corners. These regular sessions had a simple format: play a classic album in full through the venues audiophile system and then have a live ensemble improvise a response. The night in question focused on drummer Tony Williams 1964 Blue Note album, Life Time, and the music conjured that night inspired Skinner to write an albums worth of new music. Skinner recorded an album of that music with a cellist, bass, and two saxophonists subsequently putting it aside, occasionally bringing it out for some attention in between his many other creative projects. Gradually, the record began to take shape as he embraced the studio recordings and accentuated their idiosyncrasies.

Orange And Blue was first released in 1994 and is a remarkable testament of Al Di Meolas unique sense of swing. The legendary guitarist recorded the album on the Al Di Meola Jazz Guitar, a custom hollow-body guitar designed in collaboration with Gibson, which allowed him a warmer tone to add to his established signature sound. The album itself is a tasteful collection of explorative compositions, with standout songs such as Chilean Pipe Song further cementing Al Di Meolas growth as a versatile writer and gifted guitarist.
