Vinyl LP pressing. 2020 album from British gothic metal pioneers Paradise Lost. Obsidian, the group's 16th studio album, was recorded with producer Jaime Gomez Arellano, eschews it's immediate predecessors' gruesome, myopic approach in favor of a richer and more dynamic deluge of black shades. From the deceptive elegance and dual atmospheres of opener "Darker Thoughts" through to the crushing, baroque doom of war-torn closer "Ravenghast", Obsidian reveals a band in masterful control of a broad array of vital ideas.

ABBATH comment on the album: "Abbath, honed sharp by trial and terror, proudly present 'Outstrider' - our latest catharsis wrung from the guts of darkness. Forged in fiery furnace of adversity, hammered on an anvil of rage, this album is conjured from conflagration coughed from rift of Chaos, rising like a Phoenix from the Pit, to infect our Spitegeist with shamaniacal reflections sheathed in metal compositions, hooked and riffed by razor wire licks impaling bass-lines pulsed on drumbeats dredged from thunderous abyss, by a hive-mind wed to one whole emission: To boldly go where no band has gone before and one step further!"

Terrible Certainty [180 Gram]

Vinyl: $29.98 UNAVAILABLE

MP3 Album: $11.49 Download

180 gram vinyl LP pressing. One of the "big four" of Teutonic thrash metal along with Destruction, Sodom and Tankard, Essen's Kreator helped pioneer death metal and black metal as we know it but are best known and beloved for their classic thrash metal style. They were one of the first group's to sign to a major label and have gone on to sell over two million albums to date making them one of the best-selling German thrash metal bands of all time. Kreator's highly anticipated third studio effort, 1987's Terrible Certainty, saw the band living up to their reputation as one of the era's finest modern thrash exports with power to spare thanks to the addition of guitarist Jörge Trebziatowski. This double vinyl reissue also contains the Out of the Dark... Into the Light EP which was originally released in 1988 and expanded in 1992. The EP's six live tracks were recorded at Dynamo Club, Eindhoven, Netherlands, in 1988 and at Werner Seelenbinder-Halle in East-Berlin, East-Germany in 1990.

Desolation

Vinyl: $24.98 Buy

MP3 Album: $5.99 Download

Vinyl LP pressing. 2018 release. Anticipation was high for the release of Hunted in 2016, the sophomore album from Denver's Khemmis and follow up to acclaimed debut Absolution. Rather than the all too common sophomore slump, the band raised the stakes and blew everyone away with their rapidly progressing songwriting and production quality, culminating in Hunted being named Album Of The Year for 2016 by Decibel Magazine. Now in 2018, after wrapping up the Decibel Magazine Tour with Enslaved, Wolves In The Throne Room and Myrkur, the excitement for their third album Desolation is palpable across the metal spectrum. From the stadium-sized opening notes of "Bloodletting," it is immediately evident that the band are again putting distance between themselves and their earlier influences to inform a sound that is singularly their own. Working for the third time with Dave Otero at Flatline Audio in Denver, the band and producer now have the familiarity and mutual experience to arrive at the perfect symbiosis of songwriting, arrangement and production value. While Khemmis are undeniably influenced by doom and classic metal, to tag them with those labels doesn't do justice to what's accomplished on this album, a perfect representation of modern heavy metal in 2018 that integrates the past in a way only possible in the present.

Hunted

Vinyl: $24.98 UNAVAILABLE

MP3 Album: $4.99 Download

Vinyl LP pressing. 2016 release. Khemmis's first album, Absolution, was released by 20 Buck Spin in July 2015 and steamrolled all that came in contact with it's unforgettable heaviness and classic melodicism. Virtually unknown outside Denver at the time, by year's end they had landed in the #9 spot on Decibel's annual top 40 albums of the year. Hunted reveals a Khemmis fortified in it's purpose and vision, forging an unrivaled synthesis between immense doom riffs and Maiden-esque harmony. Overall song length has increased, yielding expansive arrangements and dramatic storms of elegance and melancholy. Not content to plod through a sea of tears, and always a rock band first, they approach a High On Fire-like pace with the pummeling "Three Gates." The lauded singing of vocalist Philip Pendergast reaches ascendant new heights on tracks like "Candlelight" and "Beyond The Door," while the tasteful use of harsh vocals remains, providing a dark, foreboding contrast. The thirteen-minute title track closes the album with an epic stunner. Hunted will solidify Khemmis's place at the vanguard of doom's most notable modern manifestations, in large part because they transcend the label itself.

Black Label Society bandleader Zakk Wylde wields his guitar like a Viking weapon, bashing out thick riffage and squeezing out expressive squeals as if the glory of his Berserker brotherhood depends upon every single note, which of course, it does. Charismatic beast and consummate showman, Wylde puts his massive heart and earnest soul on display with unbridled, unchained, animalistic passion in Black Label Society, whether it’s a crushingly heavy blues-rock barnstormer or a piano-driven ode to a fallen brother. Each Black Label Society album is another opportunity to top the one before it, but like AC/DC or The Rolling Stones, BLS isn’t here to reinvent the wheel. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. It’s a brand we can trust. Grimmest Hits, the band’s tenth full-length studio album and follow-up to Billboard Top 5 entries Catacombs of the Black Vatican (2014) and Order of the Black (2010), Black Label Society submit new anthems like radio single “Room of Nightmares,” the bluesy “Seasons of Falter,” and Southern-fried “The Day That Heaven Had Gone Away” to the BLS faithful; 12 unstoppable tracks to add to that lifestyle soundtrack.

What The Dead Men Say [LP]

MP3 Album: $7.99 Download

Over the past 20 years, Grammy-nominated band TRIVIUM — Matt Heafy [vocals, guitar], Corey Beaulieu [guitar], Paolo Gregoletto [bass], and Alex Bent [drums]— have quietly claimed their place at the forefront of heavy music in the 21st century. The Florida-based band is pleased to announce that its ninth full length What The Dead Men Say will be released through Roadrunner Records on April 24.

"What The Dead Men Say is everything that is Trivium," explains Heafy. "On this album, one can hear the proper ingredients of past, present, and future Trivium. The Trivium sound is having everything the band does — on one album."
"With the new album, we took what worked on the The Sin And The Sentence and dialed it all up to 11," says bassist Gregoletto.
Beaulieu echoes that sentiment, saying, “We wanted to build on the foundation that we established with the last album. The record has all the elements that are Trivium — along with all of us wanting to keep pushing ourselves creatively. This led to a highly-inspired and fast-paced writing and recording process that really captures the energy of the band."

Cirith Ungol

Forever Black [LP]

Vinyl: $25.98 UNAVAILABLE

MP3 Album: $8.99 Download

Vinyl LP pressing. 2020 release from the iconic metal band. Cirith Ungol first appeared on the scene with their self-financed debut album, Frost and Fire, via their own Liquid Flame Records imprint in April 1981. It was obscure and arcane, mysterious and eccentric, epic and expansive, but most of all unfailingly, bone-crushingly heavy, dark and doom-filled. Now, as the Cirith Ungol resurrection enters it's fifth year, the band proudly presents Forever Black, Cirith Ungol's first collection of all-new material in 29 years! Make no mistake: Forever Black is a classic Cirith Ungol album in every sense of the word. The trademark dark and foreboding riffs, pounding rhythms, and soul-searing vocal attack are instantly recognizable as the Kings of the Dead. From a songwriting standpoint, Forever Black touches on all of the elements that make Cirith Ungol revered, from the exhilarating uptempo call to arms that is "Legions Arise" to the clever incorporation of past glories in "The Frost Monstreme" to the somber and dynamic "Stormbringer" to the primal chest-beating epic finale of the title track. Lyrically, Forever Black explores topics ranging from high fantasy themes to rallying cries for the legions to apocalyptic visions of burning fires, incarnate evil and jet- black darkness. The icing on the cake is the striking cover painting by Michael Whelan, whose magnificent visuals remain inextricably associated with Cirith Ungol.

Although very influential to future black metal bands due to it's lyrical content, the music itself is more reminiscent of traditional heavy metal.

Katatonia

City Burials [LP]

Vinyl: $37.98 UNAVAILABLE

MP3 Album: $9.99 Download

Formed in 1991 by Jonas Renkse & Anders Nyström, and transitioning from early pioneers of the rising black/death/doom movement, to powerhouses of the progressive metallic rock genre, the Swedish connoisseurs of melancholy return with their stellar new opus, City Burials - the band’s eleventh studio album, & first since 2016’s haunting The Fall of Hearts was brought before the world.

With the winds of a new direction steering the band on their latest journey, City Burials stands as Katatonia’s new triumph of deep & enigmatic progressive rock – the fruits of a rejuvenating and profound chapter in the band’s legacy; a catalyst for its creators, with a collection of moments constructed out of the fragments of an ever-evolving life. Compiled into one of their most important modern works and statements to date, the finely-honed instrumentation provides a multi-textured backdrop with the voice of Jonas Renkse guiding us through these latest trials of loss and ruin.

Beyond their core creative duo, Katatonia are very much a full-blown band, and the chemistry between Jonas, Anders and their band mates – bassist Niklas Sandin, drummer Daniel Moilanen and most recent recruit, guitarist Roger Öjersson – has never sounded more potent, with City Burials being the first album Katatonia have made since Öjersson became a full-time member.

Inspired by an injection of fresh blood into Katatonia’s creative brew, City Burials is an album that sees the band reclaim part of their heavy metal roots, via several moments of exuberant, old school classicism, deftly woven into these new songs’ kaleidoscopic fabric. Resulting in an album that looks certain to push the band ever further into the spotlight.

City Burials was produced by Nyström/Renkse and recorded at Soundtrade Studios, Tri-Lamb Studios & The City Of Glass, throughout October & November 2019, with engineering work handled by Karl Daniel Lidén with mixing and mastering by Jacob Hansen. The album also features a guest appearance by Anni Bernhard, the voice behind Stockholm based act Full of Keys. Artwork appears courtesy of Lasse Hoile, the image itself representing the ongoing era of the Dead End King.

The band will be supporting the release with festivals and touring planned throughout 2020 and 2021 including an appearance at 2020’s Psycho Festival.

1979 was MOTÖRHEAD year – the year of ‘Bomber’. MOTÖRHEAD, the loudest band in the world, with the power and force of a hundred pneumatic drills they destroyed the nation over and again and no-one, repeat no-one, remained unaffected by them – everyone was torn limb from limb. The album ‘Bomber’ and was ten times more powerful than their first album ‘Motörhead’, which was a killer in itself. The production was in the capable and experienced hands of one Jimmy Miller, whose previous successes had been with the likes of the Rolling Stones. He brought out the very best in the boys and the total effect was lethal. ‘Bomber’ is full of real skullcrackers, brain damaging to the nth degree and with the hit single 'Bomber' and tracks like 'Dead Men Tell No Tales' you can doubtless guess the destroying effect of the whole affair. That’s Motörhead; straight, basic, down to earth rock and roll, with absolutely no holds barred.
